‘OUR JOURNEY TO ISLAM’
DA’WAH TRAINING PROGRAM: ISLAMIC OUTREACH ABIM
1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 Islamic Outreach ABIM (IOA) since its 1987 inception has strengthened its mission in conveying the beauty of Islam to all mankind. Cultural openness and tolerance utilizing diplomacy, persuasion and simple language are the cornerstones of IOA da’wah approach, implementing Allah SWT’s direction: “Invite (all) to the Way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching, and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious. For thy Lord knoweth best, who have strayed from His path, and who receive guidance.” (Q16:125). IOA focuses on transparency; differences of opinion are encouraged in seeking the truth. We share knowledge through discussions, talks, presentations and printed material circulation. IOA follows the principle of ‘no compulsion in Islam’, thus providing learning and understanding of Islam for non-Muslims, even though conversion to Islam may not follow.
1.2 Throughout almost twenty (20) years of its existence, IOA has facilitated the conversion of 1,096 new reverts, 441 of whom are females. 85% of them are 25 years old and above, and 64% are foreigners. Year 1992 alone recorded 107 reverts, a high watermark, and today annual conversions 100 per year. IOA also receives reverts from the Religious Department, PERKIM and other similar organizations for attendance in religious classes, pre-marital courses and other relevant programs conducted on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. An estimated 5,000 reverts have attended classes and programs organized by IOA.
1.3 The Islamic Outreach ABIM began offering a specific Da’wah training program in the early 90s under the title, “Converts Development Program” or DP for short. This program has been received very well and many Muslims reverts have undergone various education and training programs in our office in Kuala Lumpur. IOA aspires to improve the program and expand it all over Malaysia.
2. PROGRAM CONTENT
2.1 The program’s primary goal is to train young Muslim volunteer Da’wah workers to (1) reach out to non-Muslim audience with Islam’s message, and (2) train more Da’wah workers by duplicating themselves many times over. De-Islamization forces are extremely active today and are aggressively seeking to reduce the spread of Islam and, if possible, remove Islam and its influence from the community. Even so, Muslims are suffering from indifference and apathy and involved mainly in seeking excessive material gain and security. Those Muslims, who are “active” Islam, often limit themselves to establishing and running mosques and other Islamic institutions; these are admirable activities but they do little in providing a solid foundation for the spread of Islam. Recruitment of new reverts, their training and the removal of stereotypical images and misapprehensions should play a significant role along with other Islamic activities. IOA’s Da’wah training program is a small contribution towards achieving these goals.
2.2 The first phase will concentrate on the training of young da’wah volunteers; the second phase would entail organization of road shows with the cooperation of interested organizations. The ‘graduates’ of this program would be expected to become speakers on the theme ‘Our Journey to Islam’. Training is essential for proper presentation by each speaker so as to correctly represent both Islam and the speaker’s unique spiritual perspective. The main goal of each talk is sharing their personal experience in becoming Muslims and when suitable introducing basic Islamic concepts to the audience. Thus, the preparation and road show method will expand IOA’s public initiatives and recruiting potential da’wah volunteers to join this program, hence increasing IOA’s presence in society and opening up opportunities to laymen, particularly non-ABIM members, to participate in this noble work.
3. THE SYLLABUS
3.1 The syllabus for the training component of this program aims to impart in the participants the equivalent of three semester courses of three credit hours each but given in 80-90 contact hours condensed over the period of three (3) months. The courses include role plays, quizzes, speech making and case conferences. Most of the courses are handled interactively keeping lectures to a minimum. The student speakers themselves learn the art of listening and speaking by full participation in the first phase.
3.2 The core modules will include seven sections covering Fundamentals of Islam, Handling people, Presenting Islamic beliefs and practices, Areas of Clarification (misconceptions held by the Muslims), Misconceptions about Islam and Muslims (held by the non-Muslims), Cross-cultural da’wah and Professionalism in da’wah. Special topics seen as relevant at the time of offering the course will also be introduced to the course participants.
4. RESOURCE PERSONS
4.1 The tradition of requesting local scholars from among ABIM activists and activists/professionals from other organizations to participate in the training program will continue in the future.
5. SUGGESTED SCHEDULE
5.1 A new schedule is suggested that removes disadvantages of the previous experiences while keeping the best of them. According to this schedule classes will meet at least once a week during the weekdays (Monday – Friday) from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. over the weekend (Saturdays or Sundays) with necessary breaks. The program will continue through until it concludes with a graduation ceremony.
6. THE FEE
6.1 There will be no fee charged to students for participation in the training section. However, students will be responsible for their own transportation and related costs.
6.2 Funding for the road shows will be supplemented by sponsoring agencies and groups providing in kind and financial assistance to cover all expenses.
7. THE ROAD SHOW
7.1 The Execution and ‘Ambassadors”. The training program in effect will create “Ambassadors’ for Islam and indirectly for the Islamic Outreach ABIM programs. It is the execution of their training that will be the most far reaching and impacting element of the proposal. As our multi-ethnic and multi-religious culture faces challenges in the second 50 years of its Independence, this program contributes towards the understanding and development of a window for individual spiritual growth for non-muslims. It also provides Muslims with a call to reawaken their faith and deepen their commitment to their own faith.
7.2 The road show will be organized with the cooperation of interested organizations, including Government-linked Corporations (GLCs) and local private and public universities. It is the organizers fervent hope such cooperation would forge a strong relationship between Islamic Outreach ABIM and the public and at the same time help to dispel any misconception surrounding the public with regard to the teachings of Islam.
8. SPONSORSHIP
8.1.1 Islamic organizations, Islamic centers and private corporations will be approached to sponsor the participants in the program, while IOA will take responsibility of organizing, publicizing and recruiting trainees. IOA will also provide the venue, resource persons and teaching materials.
8.1.2 Islamic Outreach ABIM is also seeking the support of other Islamic-based organization and corporation and other national groups and organizations who are interested in this work.

ABIM : We are an Islamic state in practice

Julai 24, 2007

Fauwaz Abdul Aziz
Jul 21, 07 2:15pm

Notwithstanding the constitutional and theoretical debates, Malaysia has been an Islamic state in practice ever since Independence, said the Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (Abim).

Its president Yusri Mohamad said the so-called Islamisation process has not introduced any significant novelty.

“On the contrary, it seeks to preserve the religious practices and values of its Muslim citizens.

“The only ‘changes’ that have occurred are in the attitude of those who cannot accept what has already been happening for a long time,” said Yusri when met at Abim headquarters yesterday.

He was commenting on the strong objections expressed following the statement of Deputy Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak on Tuesday that Malaysia is not a secular state but an Islamic one. more
